The Georgetown youth who was shot twice by a security guard Monday night was not attempting to rob a Diamond, East Bank Demerara supermarket but was shot after he was confronted about counterfeit money he and his friends had paid with, Police headquarters has clarified.
Twenty-six-year-old Shaquille Dalrymple of Campbellville Housing Scheme in Georgetown was shot to his back and side; he had to undergo emergency surgery at the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital Monday night.
The owner of the supermarket had told the Guyana News agency that he thought the men were there to rob him.
Police said Dalrymple and two other men paid with counterfeit money at the HUA Chinese Supermarket.
According to the Police, at about 20:00hrs on Monday, the three men entered the supermarket and made purchases with two $5000 notes, collected their change and left. While the men were leaving, a male cashier confronted them after checking the notes and determining that it was counterfeit money.
Police said the men ran towards a car that was parked on the roadway in an attempt to escape but the cashier stood in front of the vehicle to block them. It was claimed that one of the men who were in the front passenger seat started shooting.
At this moment, the armed security guard on duty at the supermarket responded and opened fire on the men. Dalrymple was shot and fell on the road while his two other accomplices escaped in the car.
The security guard is in custody assisting with the investigations.
