Young farmer found dead in Berbice River; face mutilated, throat slit

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 24-year-old farmer whose body was found downwards in the Berbice River on Tuesday.

Dead is Kevin DeAbreu of Wiruni Village, Upper Berbice River. According to the police, the young man was last seen on Sunday, September 12 at around 18:00hrs imbibing with friends at a shop.

He later left in a boat in the said river and at around 11:00hrs on September 14, his body was discovered floating. Deputy Toshao Randy Osbourne was immediately informed and he subsequently contacted the Kwakwani Police Station and informed the police.

Ranks examined the body and discovered that the face was mutilated and there appeared to be a wound in the region of the neck. DeAbreu was escorted to the Kwakwani Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted soon as investigations continue.
