HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE

University of Guyana’s medical student, soon to be doctor, Karishma Narain is set to graduate from the University of Guyana, School of Medicine with a perfect Grade Point Average of 4.0. Karishma completed five hectic years of medical education at Guyana’s only CAAM-HP accredited medical school- UG.

Karishma gained a perfect GPA by securing 36 As in her classes and is set to receive the President’s Medal at the afternoon session of UG’s 53rd Convocation.

A GPA of 4.0 is nothing new to Ms Narain, in fact, she gained entry to the University of Guyana, School of Medicine after completing an Associate Degree in Chemistry (UG) where she also graduated with a perfect GPA of 4.0.

When asked to comment about her medical journey Karishma said “yes it was difficult, frustrating at times and sometimes you even question yourself and your abilities. But it was also fun and exciting. You create such a bond with the people around you that they become like family and they make the 5 years memorable.”

The hardest part of the journey she opined was trying to maintain a balance between medical school, personal life, social life and religious life. While in school, on weekends, she took therapeutic runs at the park and seawall and socialise with family and friends.

ADVICE TO MEDICAL STUDENTS

Accept that it’s difficult and find a strategy that works for you and stick to it. Sometimes comparing yourself to the people around you can be a stimulant to work harder but sometimes it can also become toxic to you. Be excited to learn. Relax and take breaks as you need them. For me, some days that was after 2 hours of studying and others it was after 15 minutes of studying. Most importantly, make it worthwhile. It’s 5 years of your life that you won’t get back.

Karishma is considering a speciality in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

UGMSA salutes Dr Karishma Narain and wishes her nothing but best wishes for an exciting future!!
